Barnard, Segerblom land spots on U.S. youth team

Chris Barnard of Newport Harbor High and Costa Mesa resident Daniel Segerblom earned first-place finishes at a high-profile sailing event Monday that landed them spots on U.S. Sailing’s 2009 Youth World Team.

The youth team will represent the United States at the 39th Volvo Youth Sailing International Sailing Federation World Championship in Buzios, Brazil July 9-18.

Barnard won the boys Laser Radial at the ISAF Youth World Qualifier.

Segerblom qualified for the team with Korbin Kirk after they won the U.S. Youth Multihull Champoinship at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach.

Segerblom, 13, along with Kirk, were awarded the Arthur J. Stevens Trophy, given to the top youth doublehanded fleet racing team in the country.

Also at the event this past weekend, Sage Hill’s Mac Mace and Newport Harbor’s Jeff Ascheris took second place in the boys’ International 420s. Sage Hill’s Sally Mace and Corona del Mar’s Heather May came in third in the girls’ Club 420s.
