Boys’ Basketball

Marina improved to 3-0 in Sunset League play and won for the second time in road league action Friday when it defeated host Edison, 63-54.

The Vikings, who improved to 16-3 overall, never trailed.

“I thought we were very active defensively right from the start,” Holmes said. “They (Edison) missed some shots, but I think our defensive effort had a lot to do with that.

“We were able to get an early lead and I thought we did a nice job of keeping them at bay for most of the game.”

Marina never trailed yet still couldn’t pull away from the Chargers, who were down just 29-25 at the half. Edison also pulled to within two points (29-27) on a Max Prendergast jumper in the first 23 seconds of the second half, but a potential score-tying shot by Dylan Garrity hit the back of the rim and Marina took possession. The Vikings then went to outscore the Chargers, 23-9, in the quarter to take a commanding 52-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

“I think we went from a seven point lead to a 14-point lead really quick in that third quarter,” Roger Holmes said. “There were three or four stops we made in a row on defense and scored on the other end of the court. Our transition game was really good.”

Garrity was red-hot in the first half and led all scorers with 16 points. The sophomore guard picked up the slack for injured teammate Kyle Boswell, who, despite a bad back, played in spurts Friday. Boswell sat out much of the second quarter and the entire fourth quarter.

“That, obviously, had a lot to do with the game,” Holmes said of Boswell’s injury and limited playing time. “He’s a great player. I thought Garrity had a great first half, but we did a good job of tightening up on him in the second half.”

Garrity led all scorers with 28 points. Prendergast and Jordan Zumwalt each scored nine for the Chargers.

Garrett James recorded a triple-double for Marina with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Jacob Tricarico scored six points and added 12 rebounds and six blocks. Brendan Holmes led the Vikings in scoring with 24 points and also pulled in eight rebounds. Tyler James and J.J. James, brothers of Garrett, scored nine and eight points, respectively.

“Jacob’s really been controlling the boards and he’s been doing a really great job on the glass,” Roger Holmes said of Tricarico.

Both teams resume Sunset League play Friday, with Edison hosting league unbeaten Los Alamitos at 7 p.m. and Marina playing its third road league game in four starts by traveling to Esperanza for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Fountain Valley: The Barons were outscored, 6-3, in overtime Monday by Esperanza and dropped a 48-45 Sunset League game to the visiting Aztecs.

Previously, the Barons dropped a 66-48 game at Los Alamitos. Niles Marquez scored 16 points and Saba Sheida had 12 points. Fountain Valley plays at 7 p.m. Friday at Newport Harbor.
