Lions dump Westmont to stay perfect in conference

COSTA MESA — Junior forward Rachel Copeland scored 20 points to help lead the No. 2-ranked Vanguard University women’s basketball team to a 83-75 Golden State Athletic Conference win at the Pit Saturday night.

Copeland hit four of seven from three-point range and was perfect from the free-throw line, hitting four of four. Senior Lauren Gregory and junior Diana Neves scored 13 points each, while sophomore Molly Pfohl added 11 points for the Lions (16-2, 9-0 in conference).

The Lions shot 27 for 55 from the field (49.1%) and nine for 22 from three-point range (40.9%).

Alisha Heglund scored a game-high 22 points to lead Westmont (14-3, 6-3), which outrebounded the Lions, 42-28.

Vanguard led, 38-37, at halftime, but pulled away in the second half.

The Lions play host to Cal Baptist Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
