Temple Bat Yahm’s Mitzvah Day
More than 200 children and adults, ages 5-90, participated in a variety of community service projects as part of the annual Mitzvah Day at Temple Bat Yahm in Newport Beach on Sunday, Jan. 25.
Each of the Religious School classes, from Kindergarten through 9th Grade, had a different project, including:
• Birthday and Welcome Boxes for children and women at Human Options Shelter
• Preparing lunches for SPIN and the Laguna Beach Friendship Shelter
• Collecting sports items and equipment to be distributed to children in third world countries around the world
• Letter writing to United States soldiers in Afghanistan
• Bake Sale to benefit Jewish Family Service Social Agency
• Collecting and sorting clothes for Working Wardrobes
• Little Corona Beach Clean-up
• Musical Performance at Heritage Pointe Retirement Home
• Petition and Letter Writing for Mothers Against Drunk Driving
• Uganda Abayudaya Benefit Sale
Rabbi Mark S. Miller, Rabbi Teri Appleby and Cantor Jonathan Grant all participated in the day-long event that is dedicated to “Tikkun Olam”—repairing or improving the world.
According to Betsey Dougherty, Co-Chairperson for Mitzvah Day 2009, “We are thrilled that the Temple Bat Yahm community came together for this important day, and we are particularly excited that so many children and their families participated.”
The event was co-sponsored by the TBY Religious School and the TBY Social Action Committee.
