LONG BEACH — Junior guard Rebecca Maessen poured in a career-high 24 points to lead the UC Irvine women’s basketball team to a 68-62 Big West Conference win Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.

Maessen was nine for 18 from the field, including three of four from three-point range. She also added eight rebounds which tied her career-high, four assists and one block in 35 minutes of action. Senior forward Kelly Cochran scored 12 first half points on six-of-nine shooting from the floor, while sophomore center Kim Barnes had 10 points and nine rebounds for UCI (5-16, 2-6).

SANTA CLARITA — Senior Brandon Glenn had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions in their Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Junior Elvis Whitelow added 11 points for Vanguard (5-14, 4-7 in conference). Junior Gregory Scott’s layup with 19 seconds left proved to be the game-winner, as the Lions held off The Master’s.

Sophomore forward Molly Pfohl added 17 points, while senior forward Lauren Gregory contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for Vanguard (18-2, 11-0 in conference).

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Freshman Gary Detwiler’s three-run, pinch-hit home run in the top of the ninth gave the Pirates a 4-2 lead, but Cuesta rallied for three in its ensuing half inning to claim the nonconference contest Saturday.

It was the second pinch-hit homer in two days for Detwiler.

But second baseman Alonzo Torres’ throw to first on what would have been a game-ending double play, got away for an error, allowing the winning run to score off closer Scott Hong. Hong gave up a two-run single to allow Cuesta (3-2) to tie the score.

OCC starter Brett Wallach pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out six.

Freshman Mykal Stokes went three for four with two triples for OCC (2-2).

RIVERSIDE — The Lions swept the top five singles spots to open their season in the nonconference road match Saturday.

Sophomore Tino Brodar won 12 of 15 games at No. 3 singles and junior Florian Lemke won 12 of 16 to pace the visitors.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

New Mexico invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — UC Irvine sophomore Madeline Leduc finished fourth in the triple jump at the Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Leduc’s top mark was 37 feet, 10 inches.

UCI senior Natasha Wardley was eighth in the 60-meter dash (7.92 seconds) and freshman Golde Ibia was eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.05).

Wardley was 12th in the long jump at 16-4 1/4 , while freshman Sanmisola George finished 16th in the 200 (26.19).
