Henderson earns Big West weekly accolade

IRVINE — UC Irvine freshman Steven Henderson was named Big West Conference Player of the Week in men’s tennis Wednesday.

Henderson went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles during the Anteaters’ opening week of the season. Henderson defeated Alex Moreno of Pepperdine, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6, and Georgy Batrakov of Brigham Young, 6-3, 6-4.

Henderson teamed with freshman Fabian Matthews, a Corona del Mar High graduate, to defeat Batrakov and Hwang of BYU, 8-5.

Henderson is now 9-5 on the year in singles.

UCI plays host to Loyola Marymount Thursday at 1 p.m.
