COSTA MESA — Vanguard dropped to 5-16, 4-9 in Golden State Athletic Conference play following Saturday night’s home loss.

Biola (17-6, 8-5) outscored the Lions, 37-30, in the second half to pull away.

Alex Chapman led Vanguard with 17 points and seven rebounds and Brandon Glenn added 14 points and eight rebounds.

SANTA BARBARA — The Anteaters attempted only six free throws, while the Gauchos made 20 of 25 foul shots in the Big West Conference game Saturday at the Thunderdome.

Junior Rebecca Maessen led the visitors (5-18, 2-8 in conference), with 18 points.

Sophomore center Kim Barnes had eight rebounds, one steal and one block to go with her two points.

UCSB (15-7, 10-0) was led by Lauren Pedersen, who scored 16 points.

Diana Neves had 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Vanguard (19-3, 12-1 in conference).

Jaclyn Blied had all her 12 points on four three-pointers.

Center Megann Alberts had a game-high 18 points for Biola (14-7, 7-6).

LA JOLLA — Julia Fancher, Sarah Frost and Kat Plummer each scored two goals in Saturday’s second-round match of the Triton Invitational, but it wasn’t enough for the No. 12-ranked Anteaters against No. 5 San Diego State. The teams were tied at halftime, but San Diego State outscored UCI (4-1) by a goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters.

UC Irvine 14, Santa Clara 8

LA JOLLA — The Anteaters had little trouble in the opening round of the Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Complex, building a 5-0 lead and never looking back.

Gianna Rossi and Fancher led UCI with four goals apiece.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Pacific

IRVINE — The host Anteaters improved to 10-2, 6-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with Saturday’s 30-21, 30-17, 28-30, 30-24 ictory against the Tigers (2-10, 0-7) at Crawford Court.

Freshman opposite Carson Clark led the Anteaters with 23 kills and senior setter Ryan Ammerman added 50 assists.
