MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pacific 65, UC Irvine 55

STOCKTON — Pacific Coach Bob Thomason became the Big West Conference’s all-time victories leader Saturday night at the Spanos Center.

Senior Kevin Bland had 16 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Anteaters (8-17, 5-7 in conference), who have lost three straight.

It was the sixth double-double for Bland, tops among Big West players this season.

Junior Michael Hunter had 11 points for UCI, which lost the rebound battle, 38-24, and shot 34.2% from the field.

Pacific (14-9, 7-5), which shot 52.2% from the field, was paced by Chad Troyer’s 15 points.

Thomason, in his 21st season, has 206 conference wins.

The Tigers avenged a 52-51 loss at UCI on Jan. 15.

UCI returns to action Wednesday, when it plays host to Cal State Northridge at 8:05 p.m.

IRVINE — The Anteaters swept six singles matches and won two of three doubles sets in the Big West Conference home match Saturday.

Freshman Courtney Byron, senior Clare Fermin and sophomore Rebecca Kwan won in singles and doubles for UCI (3-2, 2-0 in conference). Kwan won 12 of 13 games at No. 5 singles.

UC Davis dropped to 5-5, 1-2.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

USC 13, UC Irvine 6

LOS ANGELES — Juniors Kat Plummer and Judy Chancellor scored twice to lead the No. 12-ranked Anteaters’ scorers in the nonconference road contest against top-ranked USC Saturday at McDonald’s Swim Stadium.

The Anteaters (6-2) were even, 2-2, after one period, but were outscored, 6-1, in the second period and never recovered.

USC, which received 15 saves from Ilse van der Meijden, improved to 6-0.

The Anteaters will play host to the UC Irvine Invitational Feb. 21-22.

FRESNO — Junior Joshua Manzano singled in the fifth and senior Zachary Leighton singled in the ninth to account for the Vanguard offense in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for the Lions Saturday.

Three Fresno Pacific pitchers walked two and struck out six to help the Sunbirds improve to 6-0, 3-0 in conference.

Vanguard, which committed two errors and allowed 10 hits, fell to 1-3, 0-1.

Fresno Pacific took control with a five-run first inning.

Vanguard will play host to Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday at 2 p.m.
