Rumsfeld, John Amos M.D.

July 20, 1928 - February 10, 2009

Dr. Rumsfeld was born in Oak Park, Illinois to Herbert William and Dorothy Amos Rumsfeld. He graduated cum laude from Carleton College in Minnesota, and earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester in New York. He subsequently trained in internal medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, served as a Captain in the U.S. Army as a research physician, and completed specialty training in chest diseases at Bellevue Hospital in New York, Stanford Hospital, and the University of California, San Francisco. He then practiced as a pulmonary disease specialist for over 30 years, including at the San Jose Medical Clinic, LaVina Hospital for Chest Diseases in Altadena, and Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California. He was a Deputy Health Officer in the Orange County Public Health Clinics from 1994 until 1997, when he retired. His career was dedicated to the care and quality of life of patients with chronic lung disease. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Meg Rumsfeld, his son John Rumsfeld and wife Tina, his daughter Susan Lindner and husband David, as well as by Meg’s daughter Bridget Christian and husband Hans, daughter Shana Barry, and son James Barry and wife Lourdes. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Anna, Justin, Julia, Evan, Eric, Natalie, Myles, Carly and Brida, and by his sister Dee Frye and husband Wes, as well as his nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his brother Bill Rumsfeld, sister-in-law Ginny and niece Carolyn Frye Halloran. In keeping with his wishes, there will be a small gathering of his immediate family.
