Newport frosh-soph champs take out rival CdM in OT
GIRLS’ WATER POLO
Frosh/Soph Championship
Newport Harbor 8, CdM 7
Newport Harbor High’s frosh/soph girls’ team overcame Back Bay rival Corona del Mar in a overtime victory at the frosh/soph championships held at El Dorado.
Sophomore Ashley Erickson and freshmen Presley Pender each scored three goals and Maddy McLaren had two to lead the Sailors’ offense.
Down two goals with just over a minute to go in the fourth period, Erickson’s powerful backhand brought Newport to within one followed by Pender’s game tying goal with 10 seconds left in regulation against the defending champion Sea Kings.
Sophomore experience and defense brought home the Sailors’ overtime victory led by goalie Isabella Donati’s career-high 13 saves and the flawless passes from Samantha Archie and Zoe Sanglerat setting up Erickson’s final goal seizing the title.
Others contributing to Newport’s championship were Emily Horrell, Paisley Muller and Sophie Leveque.
