It was the first championship in boys’ basketball for Huntington since 1993.

David Swartz had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and his put-back late in the game tied the score.

In overtime, Zach Kimber scored seven of his game-high and career-high 31 points to send the Oilers to the important victory. Kimber hit three three-point shots and added eight rebounds.

Nick Neser finished with 10 points and Robert Clark’s solid all-around performance included 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, as Huntington finished the regular season 21-5. Three of their losses were by a combined five points.

“It was a good team victory, everyone chipped in and we are back to playing as a team,” Huntington Coach Fabian Luna said. “I am very proud of the guys. Sharing a league title was not what we wanted, but we will take it. A league championship is a league championship. I am very happy for these kids. They worked hard and deserve it.”

Ocean View: The Seahawks capped a perfect run in Golden West League play Feb. 11 by hammering Westminster for the second time this season, this time by an 81-46 score. They also defeated the Lions, 72-42, on Jan. 23.

Avery Johnson poured in a game-high 23 points, Mason Jones had 11 points and Ryan Okwudibonye pulled down 13 rebounds for Ocean View, which won its 20th game and improved to 20-7 overall.

Edison: The Chargers ended Sunset League play with a 68-37 loss Feb. 12 at Los Alamitos in a game where Edison’s Jordan Zumwalt and Dylan Garrity suffered injuries and Ryan Smith scored six points with five rebounds.

The loss dropped Edison out of a tie with Marina for second place and gave the Chargers a third-place finish. Los Alamitos won the league title at 10-0.

Marina: The Vikings blew open a close game by outscoring Esperanza, 31-14, in the third quarter to pull away to a 78-55 Sunset League victory.

Brendan Holmes led the way for Marina with 20 points and five rebounds. Garrett James had 14 points and five assists and Jacob Tricarico had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikings won their 20th game and took a 20-6 record into the playoffs.

They finished second in league to Los Alamitos.

“Finishing 20-6 (overall) and 7-3 (league) was a great season and we hope to add more to it in the playoffs,” Marina Coach Roger Holmes said.

“Our experience really carried us in the fourth quarters this year and we won several games that were close because we have guys that have been through it before.

“Winning 20 games is an impressive feat and something that we are very proud of. Our team is excited for the playoff season to begin, and we hope to carry our regular season success over.”
