AZUSA — Senior Lauren Gregory made two free throws to give the visiting Lions the lead for good with 2:51 left as they protected their Golden State Athletic Conference lead Saturday night on the road.

Junior Rachel Copeland had 23 points, including seven three-pointers, to pace the No. 2-ranked Lions (22-3, 15-1 in conference).

Azusa Pacific meet

AZUSA — Ashley Rodriguez won the women’s 600 meters and set a school record and Morgan Rose won the men’s 600 in an NAIA nationals automatic qualifying time of one minute, 20.78 seconds to hightlight Vanguard University competitors at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Indoor Qualifier meet Saturday.

Rodriguez’s time of 1:36.04 broke her own school record by more than a second.

Aze Perkins broke his own school record in the men’s 60, finishing third in his heat in 7.16 seconds.

Rose’s time of 1:20.78 missed the school record by .12.

Kelsie Davis (5-foot, 3 3/4 inches in the women’s high jump) and Mike Hartanov (2:31.58 in the men’s 1,000 meters) posted provisional qualifying times for the Lions.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 6, Holy Names 3

Holy Names 6, Vanguard 5

COSTA MESA — Stephanie Leisenring’s two-run double, part of a six-run sixth inning, helped the Lions in the Game 1 win of the nonconference doubleheader Saturday.

But Holy Names (1-5) scored six runs in the first two innings to force a split. Vanguard shortstop Sarah Howe went three for four with an RBI and a run in the loss, while Leisenring finished three for three with two RBIS and a run in the victory. Elizabeth Archer, Amanda Plum and April Glenn had two hits each in the first game for Vanguard (5-4).

LA MIRADA — Thomas Frank swept at love at No. 4 singles to highlight the Lions’ Golden State Athletic Conference victory Saturday.

Fredric Sandberg defeated Colin Snow, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Sandberg also won at No. 1 doubles, teaming up with Tino Brodar for an 8-4 win for Vanguard (4-0, 3-0 in conference).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Freshman Courtney Byron won in singles and doubles to lead the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Byron defeated Maria Malex, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles, and teamed with sophomore Miranda Young, a Corona del Mar High product, to earn a 9-8 triumph at No. 3 doubles, the lone UCI doubles victory.

Freshman Stephanie Hammel posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles for UCI (5-2, 3-0 in conference).

Cal Poly is 4-2, 2-1.

LA MIRADA — The Lions’ Hana Jurcovicova defeated Joelle Tanaka, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1 singles as part of the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

IRVINE — Junior Erin Kiene scored 1:15 into the first overtime period and Anteaters held on to win the consolation game of the UC Irvine Invitational Saturday night at UCI.

No. 12-ranked UCI (7-3) held Long Beach State scoreless for the final 15 minutes of the match. Cortney Collyer led UCI with three goals, while freshman goalie Morgan Vickers, a Newport Harbor High product, had eight saves.
