HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High was tied after six heats. A strong showing by Chase Wilson and Mark Contreras in Heat seven and Michael Maddox in Heat eight resulted in the Sailors’ win at Brookhurst Street in Huntington Beach Tuesday.

The victory avenged last week’s loss by the Sailors to Edison. The two high school surfing powerhouses split their home and away series. This meet saw each team end with four first-, second- and third-place finishes.

Both Edison and Newport have two loses during the season. The Sailors’ record improved to 9-2.

The boys’ shortboard squad split the four heats and won, 48-36, a reversal of last week’s score against Edison.

Canon Call, Victor Done and Chase Wilson placed first in their heats, as Blake Davis and Bobby Okvist placed second and Mark Contreras, Erik Heimstaedt and Jared Cassidy took third in their heats. Done’s average wave score of 7.17 was high for the contest.

The girls’ shortboard squad won its heat, 14-7. Kaleigh Gilchrist placed first, with one of her waves registering 9.5, as Shelby Detmers placed second and Elizabeth Eddy placed fourth.

The bodyboard squad lost, 13-8, as Joe Suzuki placed third.

The girls’ longboard squad lost, 15-6, as Ali Hayes placed fourth.

The boys’ longboard squad lost, 12-9, as Michael Maddox placed second and Aaron Cervantes placed fourth.

The Sailors’ next big event is the 10th annual Newport Classic March 28-29 at 56th Street in Newport Beach. The competition serves as a fundraiser for the program.
