Newport-based pancake-mix maker expands distribution

In an economic climate when many small companies are experiencing little-to-no growth, Newport Beach-based, Daddy Cakes, which produces a line of nine flavors of pancake mixes, has grown exponentially over the past year, recently expanding its distribution in Orange County to Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Markets.

A fairly young company, Daddy Cakes launched its first mix in mid-2007 and, within a few months, went on to develop the complete line of nine flavors, all of which are vegetarian, with three 100% organic flavors & six vegan flavors, all available online at www.DaddyCakesBakery.com. While most small companies and start-up businesses were starting a downward spiral in early 2008, Daddy Cakes had expanded to multiple locations and by mid-2008, within a year of launching, the complete product line was picked up by a number of local retail locations in California. In addition to Whole Foods Market in Tustin and Sprouts Farmers Markets in Irvine, San Marcos and Seal Beach, Daddy Cakes can be found in Orange County at Mother’s Markets & Kitchen locations, Farm to Market in San Juan Capistrano, Hershey’s Market on Balboa Island, Promelis Market in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, Pacific Ranch Market in Orange, and Irvine Ranch Market in Newport Beach. In addition, the line is available at The Market in Park City, Utah and in Telluride, Colorado at The Panhandler and Golden Door Spa.

“The current economic climate has forced many to watch their wallets and, as a result, many restaurants have eliminated breakfast service, so Daddy Cakes is there to fill this gap and provide an option for those staying in for meals,” commented Dan Byers, who, with his brother Levi Silva, is co-founder and creative chef of Daddy Cakes. “We would like to think of ourselves as leading the rebirth of the American tradition known as the ‘pancake breakfast,’ which has always stood for unity and togetherness in our family.”

Daddy Cakes serves as a wholesome alternative to the many pancake mixes available on the market by utilizing real fruit, whole grains and organic flour to create a variety of heart-smart flavors.

“Our goal is to keep things simple in today’s fast-paced world, so that healthy options for breakfast can be more accessible and easier for active families,” continued Byers. “My brother and I think of Daddy Cakes as more than just a business, but a means of bringing families together by delivering a quality product with a healthy dose of fun, and we have no plans of slowing down.”

Byers and Silva, both “daddies” themselves, support various charitable organizations, with contributions extending to Orange County’s AYSO program, for which Daddy Cakes hosted a pancake breakfast for more than 1,200 children and their parents, at Corona Del Mar High School, and more than 2,500 hungry fans at Ensign Middle School in Newport Beach. In addition, Daddy Cakes sponsored the 2008 Blues & Brews Festival’s Annual Pancake Breakfast in Telluride, Colorado where more than 9,000 festival attendees had the opportunity to enjoy Daddy Cakes as part of a fundraiser for various higher education scholarships.
