Lifeguard tryouts take place Sunday in Newport
Applications are due today for anyone looking to become a Newport Beach seasonal lifeguard.
More than 100 applicants are expected to participate in tryouts Sunday, where candidates will participate in the 1,000-meter swim and 1,000-meter run-swim-run competition. The top finishers will be invited to the department’s training academy.
People looking to try out should check in at 8:30 a.m. at lifeguard headquarters at the Newport Pier Sunday.
The top finishers will be invited to the 125-hour training academy put on during weekends in the spring. The classes focus on CPR, First-Aid and ocean safety. Potential hires will have to pass a background check. Starting pay is $16.75 an hour as a seasonal lifeguard.
