City to fence off beach sections for sand project
Work has begun this week to move clean sand from a section of beach in West Newport between 58th Street and the Santa Ana River to a narrower section of beach between 28th and 48th streets. The project will create an expanded beach to protect the area from coastal storm waves and high tides.
Pedestrians can still use the beach except near active construction areas and parts of the beach that will be fenced off. Construction began at 28th Street and will continue westward from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The work is expected to take about four weeks and should be completed in early April, city officials said.
The project is a joint effort of Newport Beach, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the County of Orange.
