Mustangs, Eagles honored in Orange Coast League

Costa Mesa senior guard Mikey Molina and Estancia High senior guard Troy McClanahan and senior forward Tim Neumann each made the first-team All-Orange Coast League in boys’ basketball.

Molina turned around the Mustangs (10-16, 4-4 in league). Costa Mesa went from a one-win team to a CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoff team in Coach Bryan Rice’s first season.

Molina, a second-team pick last season, averaged 15.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, two steals and 1.9 assists per game, and shot 45 percent from the floor.

Molina helped the Mustangs secure the league’s No. 2 playoff entry, scoring 15 points in a 52-48 victory against cross-town rival Estancia in a league playoff game.

McClanahan, making in his second straight first-team appearance, led the Eagles (11-18, 4-4) offensively. He averaged 14.6 points per game, proving to be the league’s top three-point shooter.

Coach Agustin Heredia said McClanahan broke Estancia records for three-pointers in a season with 103 and threes in a game with 12. The second mark came in Estancia’s 72-71 loss to Lawndale in the first round of the playoffs, as McClanahan finished with a career-high 38 points.

Neumann, who averaged 10.8 points and four rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, guarded the opposition’s top post player. Neumann, a second-team pick last season, took 22 charges.

Three players making the second team were Costa Mesa senior Ben Lefebvre and junior Brian Waldron, as well as Estancia junior Kohl Jones.

Lefebvre was considered one of the league’s top defenders. He averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and usually held the opposition’s top scorer to 8-10 points below their scoring average.

Waldron, who averaged 5.2 points per game, provided stability at point guard.

Jones ranked second on Estancia offensively, averaging 13.8 points per game. He averaged 3.6 rebounds per game.

Laguna Beach’s Dylan Roley and Ryan Lawler shared the Orange Coast League Player of the Year honor.
