The Huntington Beach High boys’ lacrosse team topped Beckman, 11-6, in its season opener Friday.

Junior Andy Nemes and senior Nate Hesse each scored three goals for the Oilers. Senior Nick Refice added two goals and an assist, and juniors Andrew Jackson and Brandon Cyprus both added a goal and an assist.

Senior Jeff Wong also scored for Huntington Beach, which had its defense hold up well despite recurring penalties that resulted in man-down situations.

TRACK AND FIELD

Huntington Beach: The Huntington Beach High boys’ track and field team competed in the JSerra Invitational last weekend, bouncing back nicely from a meet against San Clemente with several solid performances.

The varsity “A” relay won the 4x100 meters and the “B” relay team finished a strong fourth. Ramon Vargas and Kaller Roemer ran with the “B” relay for the first time and were successful. Jack Dilbeck recorded the best 100-meter time of the season for the team at 11.69 seconds.

Derrick Romo had a good day in the long jump with a best of 19 feet. Logan Emery finished first in the 200 (23.52 seconds) and was third in the 400 (52.96). The varsity distance medley team of Cole Whitiker, Austin Walder, Derek Yamashita and Anthony Massi took second. Ramon Vargas, running in his first varsity meet, finished second in the second in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Edison: Several Charger girls had strong starts to the season at the Eagle Invitational on Saturday at Santa Margarita High.

Texas-bound senior Meghan Foley was tops in the 800-meter race with a time of 2 minutes, 25.18 seconds. Foley finished third at last year’s state meet.

Also, Edison senior Iesha Lumbruno claimed the top spot in the long jump (15 feet 2 ½ ). Junior teammate Allison McCoy (33-8 ) was first in the triple jump.
