Newport Mesa NJB sixth-grade boys’ All-Stars

The area tournament begins today at 11:30 a.m. at Ensign Intermediate.

Newport-Mesa eigth-grade boys’ All-Net

The Newport-Mesa Sailors went 2-1 in the NJB Super-Sectionals last weekend to advance into the National All-Net Tournament with a wild-card berth. The Sailors beat the eventual champions La Mirada Matadores in overtime, 57-52, Covina Valley Stars, 53-44 and lost to the runner-up Whittier Surfriders,50-36, in the tournament. The Sailors were led all weekend by the dominant inside play of Diego Morales, Blake Motal and John Harzan who combined for 63 points, 49 rebounds and eight blocks. Nick Hanna, Robbie Rettig, Drew Olson and Connor Kelly all provided clutch defense and big baskets throughout the weekend while Reid Meckler, Derek Kula and Blake Grable provided instant offense for the Sailors while leading the team on numerous runs throughout the weekend. The National All-Net Tournament runs March 27-29.

Newport-Mesa eighth-grade boys’ All-Net

Newport-Mesa Sailors 47, Yorba Linda Clippers 18: The Sailors improved to 9-5, ending the regular season with a big win over the Clippers in Yorba Linda. John Harzan led all scorers with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals while Blake Grable added nine points and five rebounds. Blake Motal (six points), Connor Kelly (five), Diego Morales (five), Robbie Rettig (four) and Drew Olson (three) rounded out the scoring. Reid Meckler and Derek Kula played stingy defense throughout while running the offense with precision.
