108 try out to be lifeguards
No, this isn’t a shot of a massive rescue effort for a drowning swimmer.
It’s a test to see who can make the cut and save a swimmer.
More than 100 people tried out Sunday in Newport Beach’s annual seasonal lifeguard tryouts.
The program received 175 applicants and 108 showed up to take the test, which includes a 1,000-meter swim and a 1,000-meter run-swim-run competition along the Newport Beach coast.
Top finishers will be accepted into the 125-hour training academy during spring season weekends. The class focuses on CPR, First-Aid and ocean safety. Everyone accepted will also have to pass a background check. The job pays $16.75 an hour, department officials said.
