Before Huntington Beach spends thousands of dollars to install and then maintain red-light cameras, has anyone thought of delaying the red lights (“City readies red-light cameras,†March 5)? What do I mean? When a light turns red, delay the other side from turning green by a few moments.
This would allow an intersection to be at a total standstill. If a car should run the red light, it would decrease the possibility of an accident and also allow the “safe†passage of a police car to follow that car. From what I read in the article, safety is the issue — not revenue generation.
I am not a traffic engineer, but in my mind, this should be tried first at all top-10 intersections before a decision to spend all this money is made.

If the city is interested in safety at intersections, how about resetting the traffic lights to delay the “green†light three or four seconds (red all around for three or four seconds)? On the other hand, if the city is interested in a new profit center ... go for it!
