The Ocean View High softball team has picked up right where it left off a year ago.

It’s bad news for other area teams but good news for the Seahawks, who captured the title at the Costa Mesa Tournament on Saturday by shutting out Calvary Chapel of Murrieta, 6-0.

Defending CIF champion Ocean View (6-1) started its season with five straight shutouts. In the tournament semifinals, the Seahawks blanked Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana, 5-0.

Junior pitcher Holli Floetker, last year’s Division IV Player of the Year, allowed just one hit in both of the games Saturday.

Ocean View did suffer its first loss of the season Monday, falling to Santa Margarita, 3-0.

In other softball action, Edison also started undefeated, improving to 4-0 after blanking Camarillo, 1-0, on Monday.

Sophomore Allyson Hecht improved to 2-0, giving up a one hit in the game.

Marina is also off to a fast start. The Vikings are 5-1 following Monday’s 19-1 dismantling of San Clemente. Shannon Simmons had a home run and a double for the winners and Rachel Gaber added a pair of doubles.

BASEBALL

Edison claimed the consolation championship at the Loara Tournament by shutting out Fountain Valley on Saturday, 11-0.

“Too bad it wasn’t a league game,” said a laughing Chargers Coach Steve Lambright.

The Chargers were led by sophomore pitcher Henry Owens. In 14 tournament innings, Owens allowed one earned run and four hits, while striking out 22.

Junior catcher Josh Lesinski had three doubles in the consolation championship for Edison (4-1), which plays host to Esperanza in the Sunset League opener Friday.

Fountain Valley is 3-2 and opens league play at Marina on Friday.

The Vikings are 4-1 and have won three straight since a 6-2 loss to El Toro, ranked No. 1 in the county.

“We’ve had strong pitching from seniors Paul Strong, Race Parmenter and Jordan Maddox,” Marina Coach Paul Renfrow said. “And three junior position players, Vinny Ponce, Robert Chavarria and Chad Lewis, have played really well over the last five ballgames.”

Ocean View, meanwhile, finished the Newport Elks Tournament strong with a 15-1 win over Laguna Beach in a Costa Mesa Bracket consolation game. The game was highlighted by another strong pitching performance by sophomore Alfredo Sepulveda, who improved to 2-0 by striking out five and allowing just three hits.

Senior Sean Carpentier hit a three-run home run, and senior Andrew Bynum was three for four on the day with a double and a run batted in.

“It was nice to see our bats break loose a little,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said.

Huntington Beach (1-2) opens the Sea View League at home against Foothill on Friday.

Brethren Christian is also 1-2 after losing to Calvary Chapel of Downey, 11-0, on Tuesday. The only extra-base hit for the Warriors was a double by Andy Pereria.

“I’m confident we’ll start to pick it up a little bit,” Brethren Christian Coach Josh Franco said. “We just have to execute better.”
