Sitivi, Samuelson share Sunset League MVP

Marina High senior forward Rita Sitivi and Edison sophomore Bonnie Samuelson have been named co-Most Valuable Players of the Sunset League for the recently completed girls’ basketball season.

The Utah-bound Sitivi scored 18 points and pulled down 10.5 rebounds per game for the Vikings (18-10), who finished tied for second in league before advancing to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Samuelson led Edison (25-6) with a team-high 17 points per game. She helped the league champion Chargers advance to the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship game, as well as the CIF State Division II semifinals.

Other first-team honorees included Edison senior forward Kelly Peterson and senior guard Michelle Yamasaki, as well as sophomore guard Christina Marquette. Marina senior Gracie Boelsems and junior Renee Lindquist also earned first-team status, as did Fountain Valley senior Helena Robel.

Players on the second team included Edison senior Mary Madden, Fountain Valley senior Laree Reeves, Marina junior Jordan Terukina and sophomore Alyssa Kinoshita.
