‘Snouthenge’ maquette debuts

“Snouthenge” “” a maquette of the rumored predecessor to Stonehenge, designed by Southern California artist John L. Steenhoven, will be displayed with a selection of sculptural works from Steenhoven’s 2009 “Enchantment Series” at the Cove Gallery throughout April. An opening reception will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. April 4.

Commenting on the inspiration for Snouthenge, Steenhoven noted a recent theory speculating that the prehistoric monument, Stonehenge, erected in 3000 B.C. in the English county of Wiltshire, was in fact a remnant of Snouthenge. Steenhoven says he has wondered why the Snouts destroyed this monument to themselves and replaced it with the rather uninspired Stonehenge.

Steenhoven’s guest sculptor commission at the Cove Gallery runs from Wednesday to April 30. Cove Gallery is at 1492 S. Coast Hwy., No. 8.

String Trio performs on First Sunday

Laguna Beach Live! presents three members of the Hutchins Consort in a free concert from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 5. The Consort is a group of string players who have acoustically matched instruments. The Trio, consisting of Beth Folsom on soprano violin, Omar Firestone on tenor violin and Joe McNalley on grand saraswati violone bastardo d’amore and bass, will perform classical and contemporary works at Laguna College of Art & Design, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

The College Art Gallery opens at 2 p.m. with “Best of the Best,” All Student Competition and Exhibition. First Sundays, an afternoon of music and art, is supported by LCAD, lodging establishments and city of Laguna Beach, and contributions from the audience. Museum book sale during Art Walk

Laguna Art Museum will be selling art books and exhibition catalogs to the public during First Thursday’s Art Walk from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The books offered are not part of the library’s collection but are duplicate copies, gift books not in the museum’s focus, or new books acquired from a book and catalog exchange program with other museums.

This is the museum’s largest book sale ever, and the community is also invited to view the Roger Kuntz exhibition, which is free on First Thursdays. Many of these books are hard-to-acquire, out of print exhibition catalogs. This is an opportunity to acquire books at half the original cost or less. Artists to open on First Fridays

First Thursday’s Art Walk will be followed by First Friday’s studio tours, beginning with this month’s Art Walk. Self-guided tours of 39 artist studios throughout Laguna Beach will be from 1 to 6 p.m. April 3, May 8 and June 5.

The tours are free and allow visitors to watch artists at work in their studios and discuss their work process with them.

Spencer-Devlin abstracts at Artist Eye

Artist Eye Laguna Gallery will feature abstract textured paintings by Laguna Beach artist Marni Spencer-Devlin from Wednesday to April 30. A reception with the artist will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Born in Germany, Spencer-Devlin received no formal art education. After a successful 20-year career in advertising, she returned to her first love “” art.

“I try to create a work of art that is unusual, unexpected yet harmonizes and enhances its environment,” said Spencer-Devlin.

Inside Studio Art interview is Sunday

John and Rebecca Barber’s Studio Arts Gallery will host the third in its “Inside Studio Art” interview series at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The series invites a guest artist to exhibit at the gallery and be interviewed á la “Inside the Actors Studio” in front of a live audience.

Inside Studio Art is moderated by reporter Bill Harris, best known for his entertainment reporting on Entertainment Tonight and E! Entertainment Television as well as co-hosting “At the Movies” with Rex Reed.

Industrial and fine artist Aaron R. Thomas, whose work in acrylic has earned him international clients and commissions, will be interviewed next. Thomas works in a variety of media including 3-D sculpture in acrylic and metal as well as 2-D painted works.

Retiring ‘palettes’ posted on the web

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission is planning to retire 86 artist-painted holiday palettes that are too worn to be used during the holiday season. That will leave 200 palettes in the city’s collection.

Artists or their families are invited to pick up their palettes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and April 11 at the Corporate Yard, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road.

The life expectancy of the palettes is between 10 and 15 years, although some have been damaged by vehicles while others have been weathered causing the plywood to deteriorate and split, according to a city press statement.
