Newport Harbor 5, Esperanza 4

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior Austin Wobrock brought home the winning run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field, lifting the Sailors in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to earn their first Sunset League win of the season.

Blake Davey, who has been battling a bad sinus infection and flu the last three days, led off the ninth. He reached first after getting hit by the pitch. Dan Hurley pinch ran for him and eventually scored the game-winning run.

Davey gave the Sailors a 4-1 lead after belting a grand slam in the second inning to right-center field.

Cody Green pitched three innings in relief, giving up two hits and striking out three to earn his first victory of the season.

“Big win for either team,” Newport Harbor Coach Evan Chalmers said. “We were both winless [in league] coming into the game.

“[Green] was lights outs.”

Newport Harbor (2-7, 1-2 in league) plays at Edison at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Matt Morris went five innings, gave up one hit, struck out three and walked one in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League win Friday.

John Doering, who went two for four with a run batted, stole a base and became CdM’s all-time stolen bases leader with 31 in his career.

Brian Ford went two for two and scored three runs.

Michael Bloom and Beau Attyah each drove in two runs for CdM (4-5, 2-1 in league).

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior outside hitter Weston Nielsen recorded 14 kills and five blocks to lead the Sea Kings to a 28-30, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 nonleague victory Friday night.

Dylan Davis had 14 kills and Spencer Haly added 10 kills and two blocks for CdM, ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division I.

Connor Bannan finished with 53 assists.

The Sea Kings (11-5) open Pacific Coast League play at 5:30 p.m. Tuestday at Laguna Hills.
