Newport police arrest four on suspicion of DUI

A DUI checkpoint last week in Newport Beach did not go on as scheduled, so police instead conducted a saturation patrol with officers specifically seeking out impaired drivers, authorities said Tuesday.

Police assigned four DUI patrol units and three motorcycle officers to find drivers who appeared to be intoxicated, officials said. Friday night police pulled over 38 cars and conducted 17 field sobriety exams, arresting four for DUI. Seven tickets were issued and three vehicles were impounded, police said. The patrol was funded through the California Office of Traffic Safety.
