LOSING LEVITZ

A chapter of the city’s history came to a close Thursday, when a contractor dismantled a massive Levitz Furniture sign that has been a familiar sight for decades to drivers along the 405 Freeway.

The rusted-out, red-and-white sign stood beside a Levitz store on Edinger Avenue, between the Bella Terra mall and Golden West College; the store closed more than a year ago.

VR Mason spent an entire day taking down the sign, which went up in 1963, they said. First to go was the large Levitz oval logo, which sat discarded in a corner of the parking lot while workers removed the “Furniture” portion of the sign and the three columns that raised it more than 100 feet off the ground.
