CYPRESS — Junior Alex Jiminez pitched a complete game and a two-out RBI by Dustin Orrantia keyed a two-run fifth inning to pace the visiting Lightning in the Academy League game Monday.

Jiminez allowed five hits, walked one and struck out one to improve to 3-1, helping Sage (6-3, 4-2 in league) take a half-game lead over the hosts (3-2 in league) atop the standings.

The rubber game of the teams’ three-game series is today at 3:15 at Sage Hill.

Chris Griffin was two for three for Sage, for which center fielder Nick Ongaro sparkled defensively.

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior Austin Wobrock went three for four with two doubles and a run batted in Monday as the Sailors advanced to the semifinals of the Beach Pit Classic.

Newport Harbor (5-8), which has won four of its last five games, will play host to South Hills today at 11 a.m. South Hills is ranked No. 7 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division III coaches’ poll.

Jacob McCann drove in three runs for the Sailors.

Cody Green went two for four with two RBIs and Dillan Freiberg was two for three with an RBI.

COSTA MESA — Senior first baseman Nick Pederson drove in four runs and senior shortstop Mikey Molina went three for four and scored twice to pace the host Mustangs in the Beach Pit Classic consolation game Monday.

Pederson went two for four, while Brandon Kelly was two for three with two runs batted in and Brian Waldron was two for four with two RBIs to bolster the Mustangs’ 14-hit attack.

Costa Mesa is (8-5).
