A Newport Beach man will likely be arrested on suspicion of beating his girlfriend, just as soon as he’s released from the hospital after being stabbed by the woman’s son during the altercation, police said Monday.

A 17-year-old boy was in custody Monday in juvenile hall on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after police said he stabbed his mother’s boyfriend several times Sunday night when the man allegedly hit her, Lt. Craig Fox said.

Sometime after 11 p.m. Sunday, Wendell Washam, 46, and his girlfriend got into an argument in their home in Newport Beach that turned physical, Fox said.

The woman’s son “intervened” and stabbed Washam several times in the lower torso, Fox said.

The boy, whose name is not being released because of his age, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and taken to juvenile hall. Washam was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fox said Washam will likely be arrested and booked on suspicion of spousal battery as soon as he’s released. The woman, her son and the boyfriend live together, police said.
