Local trio qualifies for national training team

Newport Harbor High’s Connor Curry, as well as Corona del Mar’s Dylan Davis and Weston Nielsen have been selected to the 2009 Boys’ Youth National Training Team.

The trio are among the 19 who made the squad. The top 12 players on the team will compete at the 2009 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championships Aug. 28-Sept. 6 in Bassano del Grappa and Jesolo, Italy.

The team will begin training in mid-August, most likely at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The team was compiled through high performance tryouts held throughout the country.

The U.S. Boys’ Youth National Team won the 2008 NORCECA Continental Championship to qualify for the world championship. That team went 4-0 and did not lose a set. Nielsen, an outside hitter, and Davis, a middle blocker, were a part of that team.

Curry is a libero and, like Davis and Nielsen, plays on the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club.
