Storied Newport Beach home goes on market for first time in 46 years

The nearly one-acre lot at 2400 Santiago Drive in Newport Beach is unassuming and barely noticeable as you approach it. It doesn’t give up much from the street view, shielding its house and yard from peering eyes. The house is tucked deep in the rectangular lot and was built by contractor Ken Bone in 1956. The all original home is done in a style of architecture similar to the French Quarter in New Orleans. The property not only enjoys a great location, it boasts a rich and storied past.

Fred and Florence Cermak sold the land to Ken Niles and his wife, Nadia, on July 19, 1955. Niles, who commissioned the home to be built, was a radio personality who played an important role in the development of radio drama throughout the 1920s. He produced and assisted with the hosting of gossip columnist Louella Parsons’ talent and interview show, “Hollywood Hotel,” famous for introducing the song “Hooray for Hollywood.” They both appeared in a 1937 feature film based on the show.

Niles also acted and narrated in about 20 other feature films, including “Out of the Past” with Robert Mitchum. He went on to work in television, including a stint on “The Bob Hope Show,” as well as “The Bing Crosby Show” and “Abbott and Costello Show.” He later wrote magazine articles about conservation.

Niles was bestowed a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his pioneering work in radio. He was there at the advent of radio as the first radio shows went on the air.

James and Louise Barclay purchased the property from Niles on July 2, 1963. Barclay recently passed away and the property is being put on the market by his heirs. The home is listed for $2.29 million by Realtor Jerri LeBlanc of Tarbell, Realtors®. The flat and secluded lot, assessed at 36,018 square feet, is the true draw of this magnificent Newport Beach property.
