Anteaters’ closer Pettis garners weekly honor

UC Irvine junior All-American Eric Pettis was named the Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week Monday after collecting a win and a save to help the Anteaters earn a three-game sweep of conference rival Long Beach State last weekend.

Thursday, Pettis pitched three shutout innings in a 3-2 win Thursday in 12 innings to earn his third victory in four decisions this season.

He then worked a perfect ninth inning of a 6-3 win Friday to post his ninth save of the season, second most in the country and tops in the Big West.

Pettis entered Monday’s action with a 2.93 earned-run average. He had struck out 24 in 27 2/3 innings, with only four walks.
