The Huntington Beach Council on Aging has selected Dale Dunn, 80, as its first Senior Volunteer Extraordinaire.

Dunn began his long history of service with the city in 1966, when he became the manager of the local Chamber of Commerce. He was the president of the Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce in 1984, and was a director of the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau for 19 years; Dunn spent three terms as its president.

Dunn also has been involved in many service organizations, and was selected as the year’s Outstanding Citizen by the Chamber of Commerce in 1994; 10 years later, he served as the Community Grand Marshal of the 2004 Centennial Parade.

Dunn has been a Rotary International member for 53 years and was the local chapter president in 1973. During his tenure, he helped acquire 12,500 books to be given to four elementary schools, and raised funds to purchase the inflatable band shell used for Central Park’s community concerts.

One of Dunn’s favorite events is the annual Duck-A-Thon, which he has worked on for all 16 years of its existence as a member of the Huntington Beach Community Clinic’s support group.

He also has spent eight years as a member of the Huntington Beach Council on Aging, and has been its president for two of those years.

While leading the group, Dunn helped it acquire and provide the funds to lay new carpet for the Rodgers Senior Center, and the council also began annual funding of a social worker for the Senior Outreach Program.

His latest pursuit is helping Rotary sell the city’s official Centennial Coins.
