RESTAURANT ROUNDUP:

Share via

The Orange County Restaurant Assn.’s Happy Hour week bar-joke contest’s winners are ... drum roll, please ... John Chapman, C. Howie and William A. O’Conner.

Oddly enough, they all have one thing in common: They’re pithy. Punchline: The jokes, that is.

“What’s red and smells like blue paint? Red paint.” (from Chapman);

“A seal walked into a club...” (Howie);

“Two men walk into a bar ... the second guy should have seen it coming.” (O’Conner).

The winners all got $50 gift cards at area restaurants.

FOR MOM’S DAY

Speaking of contests, Newport Beach’s Daddy Cakes pancake mix company is holding one for Mother’s Day.

Students 12 and younger in Orange County are eligible to enter the contest and win brunch for Mom at the District in Tustin.

Here’s what you have to do: Do a drawing illustrating what Mother’s Day means to you and submit it by May 1 by dropping it off at the valet station at the District at the northwest corner of Jamboree Road and Barranca Parkway or by e-mail to kdaskas@vestar.com. Oh, and make sure it’s on a piece of paper that’s 8 1/2 -by-11 inches.

Fifty winners will win a full-catered brunch at 10 a.m. May 9 featuring Daddy Cakes pancakes and snacks.

Other sponsors are Whole Foods Market and the District. The fun also includes live music and kids games.

A wonderful cake

If you’re going to walk the red carpet for the Newport Beach Film Festival’s opening night today, be sure to sample the cake and send your compliments to Chef Allyson Ames, founder of Wonderland Bakery at the Bluffs shopping center in Newport Beach.
