COSTA MESA — Senior night proved extra special at Costa Mesa High as its boys’ volleyball team swept crosstown rival Estancia, 25-16, 25-7, 25-21, in an Orange Coast League match Thursday.

All seven of the Mustangs’ seniors start and contributed to the sweep, including Ryan Thompson, Garrett Frazier, Jeff Dye, James Wanbaugh, Ben Lefebvre and Andy Feldman.

The seniors have also been highly instrumental in the Mustangs’ turnaround year. First-year coach Garry Currier has guided Costa Mesa to a 12-5, 4-1 in league record. Last year, Costa Mesa went 1-9 in league.

“Hopefully we can continue rolling,” Currier said.

The Mustangs were on a roll against the Eagles.

Thompson, bound for Penn State, led the way with 11 kills, while Frazier and Dye had eight kills each. Lefebvre, the team’s setter, recorded 25 assists and Feldman, the libero, contributed 12 digs.

“They were pretty fired up,” Currier said of his players’ motivation before the match. “It was senior night, so it made the crowd get into it.”

Estancia Coach Mark Cygan said the Mustangs’ experience made a big difference in the match. Cygan also said Costa Mesa served tough in the second game.

“I always hope we can get a win, and we had extra motivation against Mesa for sure,” said Cygan in his fourth year with the Eagles (3-19, 1-4). “I thought we passed better and our defense was improving. I though we accomplished some of our goals, but just came up short with the points.”

Estancia junior Kohl Jones had eight kills, three aces, two digs, one block and a block assist, while senior teammate Shane Lyons added three kills and five assists. Senior Eric Mickelson had five kills and three digs, and junior Tyler Sullivan had two kills and 10 assists for Estancia, which plays at Godinez Thursday.

Mesa plays host to the Grizzlies Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
