Pavlik ties for ninth in AVP Riverside; San Diego next

Laguna Beach resident Whitney Pavlik and partner Stacy Rouwenhorst finished tied for ninth over the weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Tour Riverside Open.

Pavlik and Rouwenhorst, seeded No. 14, won their first winner’s bracket match against No. 19 Gabriela Roney and Lenka Urbanova, 21-17, 21-15. But the duo then lost in the next round to No. 3-seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, 21-19, 20-22, 15-11.

Pavlik and Rouwenhorst then won a pair of three-game contender’s bracket matches. They topped No. 13 Priscilla Lima and Jenny Pavley, 18-21, 21-17, 15-12, before outlasting No. 11 Heather Lowe and Paula Roca, 21-23, 21-14, 15-12.

But then No. 9 Nancy Mason and Michelle More ended Pavlik’s tournament with a 21-15, 15-21, 15-10 victory.

Pavlik, 25, who starred at Mater Dei High before playing collegiate indoor volleyball at Montana and UC Irvine, split the $3,690 prize with Rouwenhorst.

The 2008 AVP Rookie of the Year and her partner will now prepare for the AVP San Diego Open, which begins May 1 in Valley Center.
