UCI’s Wilson lauded as National Player of Week

UC Irvine senior Taylor Wilson has been named National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Assn.

The 6-foot-7 outside hitter had a career-high 29 kills Saturday night to help the No. 1-ranked Anteaters defeat visiting UCLA, 30-23, 31-29, 30-32, 30-12, in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at the Bren Events center.

Wilson hit .412 with eight errors in 51 swings. He also had six digs, two aces and two blocks, while averaging eight points per set. His previous career-high kill total was 24, set in 2008.

This is the second time this season Wilson has collected National Player of the Week laurels, the third time in his career.

The Anteaters (25-4) play host to No. 7-ranked USC (18-10) in the MPSF semifinals, Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

UCI is 2-0 against USC this year.
