A man died this afternoon when a trench they worked in under an apartment building collapsed.

The workers had been doing some waterproofing under the building foundation at 4671 Warner Ave. when the soil-and-concrete trench collapsed about 2 p.m. and the man fell into the hole head first, according to Huntington Beach Deputy Fire Marshall Jeff Lopez. By the time rescue workers reached the man an hour later he had died.

The man has not been identified until family is notified.

Costa Mesa and Santa Ana firefighters joined the Orange County Fire Authority’s Heavy Rescue Team for the rescue. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
