Police, fire work to put out Dumpster fire

Huntington Beach police and fire responded in the early afternoon Monday to a large Dumpster blaze at the Thomas Crane & Trucking Co. yard on Stewart Street, with frontage at the intersection of Goldenwest Street and Garfield Avenue.

They were soon able to subdue the flames, which were sparked somehow in a garbage bin that had been sitting for weeks without incident, company employees told fire authorities.

Firefighters cut through the yard’s fence to run water lines to the blaze, standing atop a truck next to the garbage bin for a better vantage point to douse the flames.

Fire authorities suspected the blaze may have started in the truck and moved into the bin, which employees said was filled only with common materials that can be extinguished with water. The materials burned for some time, despite being drenched with water and foam.
