The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor and Pacific Life Foundation gave away $20,000 in scholarships to 10 students from Estancia, Costa Mesa, Back Bay and Monte Vista high schools at a recent meeting.

Exchange members Bob Kinton and Bob Washer introduced Tennisson Oiler, chief executive of Pacific Life Foundation who became a key contributor to the annual ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) scholarship Awards by donating $10,000 to go with the club’s $10,000.

Costa Mesa High’s recipient was Sasha DaCosta, Estancia High’s was Hannah Butler, Monte Vista High’s were Kristen Kidd and Herendira Naranjo and Back Bay High’s were Yuridia Luna, Samantha Hagerman, Arturo Yanez, Jesus Higareda, Josh Wheeler and Edwin Coronel. Students shared their inspiring stories and career goals as they were honored.

Now there will be competition at both the district and national exchange levels, leading to a National Award of $10,000.

BALBOA BAY REPUBLICAN WOMEN SEEKING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS

Five thousand dollars in scholarships will be awarded in June to three graduating high school seniors, one college student, and one returning college student by the Balboa Bay Republican Women Federated, according to Marianne Zippi.

For all students applying for a scholarship, the criteria includes being a U.S. citizen, a Republican and at least 18 years of age. Applicants must also be registered to vote; preferably women, residents of Orange County and of good character. Candidates must be planning to work toward an academic four-year degree. In addition, for returning college students, the candidate must be at least 25 and returning to college to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Selection will be based on academic achievement, community involvement, including employment, and a 1,000-word essay on “Why the United States Constitution is Unique in Human History.”

Also required are two years of transcripts, current photograph of student, and two letters of recommendation from either a teacher, counselor, principal or clergyman along with the application and essay.
