NEWPORT COAST — Pitcher Alex Jimenez produced another strong effort to help move the Lightning into first place in the Academy League Tuesday.

Jimenez improved to 8-1 after six innings of work. He leads the league in wins after beating the Eagles (13-7, 8-3 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division VI.

Sage Hill was also led defensively by its outfield, as left-fielder Pat Vorwerck, center-fielder Nick Ongaro and right-fielder Allen Brown provided stellar plays. A.J. Wolfson went two for two with a home run, while Mo Kreitenberg tripled in two runs in the sixth for Sage Hill (12-4, 9-3).

The Lightning play against Capistrano Valley Christian Friday at 6 p.m. at San Juan Capistrano Sports Park

IRVINE — Danny Moskovits went two for four with a two-run home run for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Michael Bloom added a three-run homer for CdM (12-10, 8-4 in league), which remained in second place in league, one game ahead of the Trojans and Laguna Hills.

The Sea Kings play host to University Friday at 3:15 p.m.

COSTA MESA — Eagles junior catcher Josh Dominguez was two for two with a run scored in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday at Estancia High.

Junior Ryan Cherney had an RBI triple for Estancia (7-15, 3-6 in league), which plays at Laguna Beach Friday. The Eagles likely will need to win that game to stay in contention for third place in league, with Calvary Chapel playing last-place Godinez this week.

A Laguna Beach loss Friday would give Costa Mesa at least a share of the title.

COSTA MESA — Elizabeth Cramer and Lauren Grupe scored five goals each for the Sailors in their first-round win of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Orange County playoffs Tuesday at Harper Community Center.

Morgan Fabian scored two goals, while Stephanie Storch, Sierra Michelsen and Claire Ramser had one goal each. Goalie Paige More recorded 12 saves for Newport Harbor, which plays at Foothill Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

NEWPORT COAST — Bayle Smith had 13 kills and three aces to help lead the Lightning to a 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 Academy League win Tuesday.

Michael Bear had 21 assists and Trent Friedmann had three aces for Sage Hill (15-11, 7-2 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division V.

CORONA DEL MAR — Ryan Stanek had six kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-11, 25-16, 25-18 Pacific Coast League win Tuesday.

Mike Ensign had five kills, eight assists and five aces, while Grant Templeton and Andy Morrow had four kills each for CdM (22-7, 8-0 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division I.

The Sea Kings play host to Newport Harbor Friday at 6:30 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH — Medalist Marcus Kiel shot even-par 36 to become the medalist and help provide the Sailors with their most wins, 16, in the past nine years, Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Travis Russell (38), Mychael Clark (39), Ericson Klein (41) and Kawika Morse (42) also scored in the Sunset League match for Newport Harbor (16-5-1, 7-3 in league), which finished second in league.

The Sailors compete in the Sunset League finals today at Los Serrano Country Club.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Corona del Mar High freshman Mike Moorhead shot five-under-par 67 at Mile Square Park Tuesday to top all competitors on the first day of the two-day, 36-hole event that concludes today.

Camden Nicholson (68), John Davenport (78), and Josh Starns (78) also were among those who advanced from the 32-player field to today’s second round.

The top six finishers advance to the CIF Southern Section individual tournament.

COSTA MESA — Vanessa Castro went three for three with a double and five RBIs for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.

Kira Mitana, who was three for four, improved to 13-11 in the circle after her two-hitter that came with eight strikeouts and one walk. Alosina Sikipps was two for three with a double and two RBIs and Sami Feinstein stood out defensively for Costa Mesa (13-13, 3-2 in league).

CERRITOS — Andrew Dorne and Jake Blitzer posted top qualifying times in their repsective events to pace Sage Hill School at the Cerritos Aquatic Center.

Dorne’s time of one minute, 52.18 seconds was best in the 200-yard freestyle, while Blitzer had the top time in the 100 butterfly (55.75).

Dorne qualified second in the 100 fly (56.32), while Lightning teammate Nick Wan qualified second in the 200 individual medley (2:21.29) and the 100 backstroke (55.99).

Blitzer qualified third in the 100 free.

CERRITOS — Jordan Smith-Newman qualified tied for second in the 50-yard freestyle in 28.49 seconds to highlight Sage Hill School competitors at the Cerritos Aquatic Center.

Smith-Newman qualified third in the 100 backstroke (1:12.88), and Lightning teammate Kelly Carpenter is seeded third in the 500 free with a time of 6:26.11.
