Sage Hill’s Koeberle takes Academy League title

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill School’s Alex Koeberle, the No. 3 seed, topped fifth-seeded Michael Schnieder of St. Margaret’s, 7-5, 6-2, to win the Academy League singles title at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club Friday.

Koeberle also qualified for the CIF Individuals tournament, which starts May 21. He beat No. 2 seed Justin Cheng of St. Margaret’s, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals, and Whitney’s Daniel An, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. Schneider upset top-seeded Joseph Park of Whitney, 7-6, 6-0, in the semifinals.

In doubles, Sage Hill’s Andrew Yun and Sean Batten, the fourth seed, also qualified for the CIF tournament after reaching the league final. The Lightning duo lost to Whitney’s fifth-seeded duo of Chris Paiji and Adrian Hwang, 7-6, 6-3.

The Whitney tandem upset Sage Hill’s top-seeded team of Andrew Kurzweil and Alex Manolakas, 6-0, 6-2.
