MOBILE, Ala. — Sophomore Anna Valingsten won in No. 4 singles, lifting Vanguard University past No. 8-seeded Southern Nazarene of Oklahoma, 5-4, to complete a comeback in the second round at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center Wednesday.
Valingsten won the decisive match against Steffie Plaza, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
Vanguard, who has been in the quarterfinals each of the past five years, rallied from a 3-0 deficit.
The Lions controlled the singles action, taking No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles while allowing Southern Nazarene to take only nine games. That left a decisive match at No. 4 singles Plaza and Valingsten. Valingsten took the first set 6-2 and then rallied late in the second set to go up 7-6 and force a tie-break. Plaza took the first point of the tie-breaker, but Valingsten then reeled off six straight points, before Plaza answered right back with six points of her own to go up 7-6. Battling exhaustion, Valingsten grabbed the next three points to win.
The Lions advance to play against Auburn University at Montgomery, Ala., today in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. PST.

Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference regatta
CAMDEN, N.J. — Orange Coast College’s top-seeded men’s novice eight-oared crew handled the rough conditions on the Cooper River Sunday morning and won its qualifying heat with the event’s fastest time.
The Pirates advanced to Sunday afternoon’s finals, but the finals were canceled due to windy conditions on the Camden, N.J., course. After a long delay, the regatta committee decided to cancel the remaining races.
OCC covered the 2000-meter course in 6:05.950, followed by Marist in 6:16.534, and Ithaca in 6:16.765.
Union was fourth in 6:40.115 and Cincinnati was fifth in 6:53.579. Trinity won the second heat with a time of 6:07.403, and Michigan won the third heat in 6:06.506. Michigan, which won the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia Saturday, had to fight to edge Marietta. By virtue of its morning win, OCC would have had lane one in the final against Trinity, Michigan, Marist, St. Lawrence, and Marietta.
OCC’s team consisted of Alex Atkins (cox), Austin Ward (stroke), Anthony Hohman (seven), Steven Suggs (six), Dan Blanco (five), Peter Morrill (four), Peter Nedeau (three), Jonathan Sutterfield (two) and Kyle Ridgeway (bow).
