WALNUT — Michael Liao, John Kim, Garrett Larson, Jared Namba all qualified in individual events for Friday’s championship finals at Mt. San Antonio College

Garrett Larson qualified third in the 200-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 54.05 seconds, a new school record. Larson also qualified for the consolation finals and will be seeded 10th in the 100 backstroke (53.90).

The eight swimmers in each event advanced to the championship finals, while those who finished ninth through 16th Wednesday will compete in the consolation finals.

John Kim qualified fourth in the 200 IM in 1:54.54 and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (59.41).

Jared Namba qualified sixth in the 100 back and eighth in the 200 IM in 1:55.06.

Michael Liao qualified seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 59.35.

Namba, Liao, Kim and Matt Berry were top qualifiers in the 200 medley relay in 1:36.28.

Berry, Blake Terry, Liao and Kim qualified sixth in the 200 free relay in 1:27.48.

Larson, Brian Schiefer, Carter Taylor and Namba qualified 10th in the 400 free relay in 3:12.76.

Friday’s finals begin at 6 p.m. at Mt. SAC.

Division I preliminaries

WALUNT — Sarah Furgatch qualified fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 04.29 seconds and moves on to Friday’s championship finals at Mt. San Antonio College.

Furgatch also qualified ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:54.75) and will be in the consolation finals for that event.

Kelsey Larson qualified 13th in the 500 free in 5:06.61.

Larson, Furgatch, Natalie Wong and Heather Van Hiel qualified 13th in the 200 medley relay in 1:52.94 and will compete in the consolation finals.

Estancia 5

COSTA MESA — Senior Courtney Ulrich went two for three with two runs batted in and a double Wednesday, but Estancia lost the regular-season finale, setting up an Orange Coast League must-win playoff game.

Estancia (14-8, 3-3 in league) will play host to Costa Mesa Friday at 3:15 p.m. in a league playoff game for second place and one of the league’ guaranteed postseason berths.

Championships

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Kim Condino and Claire Schmidt shared the Female Athlete of the Meet honor as they helped the Sea Kings to the league title Thursday at Irvine High.

Corona del Mar finished with 195.5 points, ahead of second-place University (110.5 points) and third-place Irvine (109).

Schmidt won the 200 meters in 26.48, took second in the 400 in 58.90 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay.

Tina Theriot won the 800 in 2 minutes, 16.39 seconds, a personal record. Condino took second in the 800 in 2:16.95. She also tied for third with teammate Laura Bilder in the 1,600 in 5:03.90. Condino was the second leg of the winning 4x400 relay.

Sarah Keddington, Condino, Theriot and Schmidt went 4:06.50 to win the 4x400 relay.

Kedding finished third in the 800 in 2:17.86.

Marissa Cummings won the 1,600 in 5:01.81, leading a group of five who qualified for the CIF Southern Section preliminaries Saturday. Cummings recorded a personal record, lowering her former fastest time by three seconds.

Melanie Powers finished second in 5:03.40, lowering two seconds from her original PR. Ashlee Powers finished fifth in 5:09.08, a five-second improvement from her former PR.

Powers (11:08.3), Cummings (11.09.40) and Bilder (11:25.62) went 1-2-3 in the 3,200.

Cummings’ time was 19 seconds faster than her former PR.

Jaycee Olsen, Devon Hoppe and Jessica Imani also advanced to the CIF preliminaries.

Olson finished second in the 200 in 26.78 and second in the shot put (33 feet, 9 inches). Hoppe was third in the 400 in 59.73, a personal record and Imani was third in the discus (106-1).

Championships

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Blain Bolus was named Male of the Athlete of the Meet after winning two individual events, as the Sea Kings finished fourth Thursday at Irvine High.

Irvine won the meet with 159 points, while University (107.5 points), Laguna Hills (103.5) and CdM (101) followed.

Bolus won the long jump (21 feet, 8 1/2 inches) and triple jump (43-1 3/4 ). He also tied for second in the high jump, clearing 6-2, and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team.

Bryan Yasukochi, Jeff Jones, Alex Swigert and Blaine Bolus finished the 4x400-meter relay in 3 minutes, 26.81 seconds, a record for the quartet.

Sebastien Welch won the 1,600 in a personal-record 4:25.70 and Ken Cooper won the shot put with a personal record of his own, 52-8 1/2 . Cooper took second in the discus (143-7).

Jones also qualified for the CIF Southern Section preliminaries by taking second in the 110 hurdles (15.68) and the 300 hurdles (40.65). Both times are personal records for Jones, who also finished 10th in the long jump.

Prior to this season, Jones never competed in track and field. He was a golfer. He competed in the hurdles as his senior project at CdM.

Swigert took third in the 300 hurdles (41.46) to qualify for CIF. Teammate Winston Hollingshead also qualified for Saturday’s meet by taking second in the pole vault (10-0).
