McMonigle pulls away in fourth

McMonigle Group 7, Jack’s Surfboards 5: Tuesday’s matchup featured two of the three teams tied for second place with 8-4 records entering.

With the score tied, 2-2, in the fourth inning, McMonigle took control when Hoyt Crance singled and stole second. Augie Miller followed with an RBI double that one-hopped the wall. Reed Quakenbush and Ryan Maister each followed with RBI singles that gave McMonigle a 5-2 lead.

On the mound, Miller started and provided three solid innings, striking out four. Quakenbush followed and Kellen Ochi sealed the deal in the sixth. Maister also contributed on defense at shortstop by coming up with a key double play, while recent AAA call-up Jonathan White came up with a big catch in center field to end the game with the tying runs on base.

Evan Clary, who came up with two hits and had a bare-handed web gem at shortstop, paced Jack’s Surfboards. In the top of the sixth, trailing, 7-2, Jack’s showed some fight by scoring three runs and had two runners on when a fly out to deep center ended it.

Jack’s Surfboards left 10 runners on base. Robbie Rosoff pitched two solid innings in relief.

Boys’ under-10 Spring Select

On Saturday, the Area Q spring select under-10 boys’ soccer playoffs were held at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex. The Newport Beach Breakers won their two scheduled games against two Tustin teams by a goal differential of 11-1. The Breakers upheld the good sportsmanship rule by not scoring more than five goals more than their opponent.

Tanner Cislaw and Alex Davis scored three goals each for the Breakers.

Nathan Medina and Harrison Moore had two goals each and Tony Morales added one goal. Riley Gleason, Marley Aragon, Tony Morales and Alex Davis played outstanding on defense. A.J. Roth was brilliant in goal allowing only one goal with 6 saves.

Girls’ under-6

Orange Tigers vs. Green Machine: Sonya Carnal and Cherish Campos led the Tigers defense. Phoenix Abe displayed a strong passion to win and used stamina, as she dribbled through the opposing team. Gabriel le Babin won several tackles and teamed with Maya Nadeau in making several runs on goal. Miriam Alkayali made some great passes. Jackie Corkhill scored her first goal.

Newport Lightning Basketball Club

The Newport Lightning boys’ seventh-grade club basketball team finished as runner-up in the Spring Slam Tournament for AAU teams hosted by Big City Sports on May 2-3.

In Saturday’s pool play, the Lightning defeated and over-matched team Big Bear, 58-18, behind the play-making of point guard Charlie Coffman and the inside-outside scoring tandem of Grant Moore (eight points) and Jack Williamson (13 points including three three-pointers) and then won a tough battle against Elsinore Hoopstars, 25-15, as center Andrew Moore dominated with six blocked shots and 14 rebounds.

Ryan Schroth and Andrew Chase shut down the visitors with a suffocating defensive effort. The Lightning beat North Orange County in Sunday morning pool play, 42-32, led by swingman Blake Flamson’s 10 points and Jeff Johnston’s six points and five rebounds, while Alec Markling distributed five assists before leaving the game with a separated shoulder.
