Big West Conference Championships

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior Matt Lahti won the hammer throw Friday on the first day of the Big West meet at Anteater Stadium.

Lahti posted a mark of 194 feet, 4 inches with teammate Jimmy Kearney placing fourth with a toss of 179-0.

Two school records fell for the Anteaters Friday. Senior Lauren Chramosta finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10 minutes, 36.39 seconds, as she broke her own mark set earlier this season.

Teammate Kendall Bruton was fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:52.31.

Freshman Golde Ibia ran a school-record 13.88 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles to qualify for the NCAA West Regional at Eugene, Ore., May 29-30. Her time broke the previous record of 13.96 set by Lauren Collins in 2007.

Other UCI men who picked up points Friday were Nick Mosey, who finished fifth in the 10,000 meters in 30:39.91, and Julian Eison, who placed sixth in the high jump at 6-8 1/4 .

UCI women who also scored points Friday were Natasha Wardley with a fifth-place finish in the long jump (19-2), Jenny Lee with an eighth-place mark of 121-9 in the javelin throw, and Kristi Fryer, who finished eighth in the pole vault at 11-1 3/4 .

In the team competition, Cal State Northridge leads both the men (61.5 points) and women (76). UCI is seventh in both with the men totaling 21.5 points and the women 15.5.

All events will be finals today with field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the track events at 4 p.m.

NCAA West Regional

DALY CITY — UC Irvine is in ninth place following the second round at Lake Merced Golf Club.

UCI junior John Chin shot two-under 70 Friday and is in 13th place at three-under 141. Sophomore Max Greil also shot a 70 and is 20th at 143.

Senior Sean Shahi shot 73 and freshman Roberto Francioni 74 as they are tied for 42nd place at 146.

Sophomore Bryan Harris recorded an 80 and is 73rd at 154.

Arizona State leads at 22-under par 554 for 36 holes after shooting a 13-under 275 in the second round Friday. Oregon is second at 560 and San Diego is third at 566. UCI shot one-under 287 and is ninth at 576.

Jesper Kennegard of Arizona State is the individual leader with a two-round total of 10-under 134 after he shot a four-under 68 Friday. USC’s Matthew Giles is in second place at 137.

The top five teams, plus the low individual not on those teams following today’s final round, will advance to the NCAA Championship at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 25-30.
