Cities to conduct DUI checkpoints

Police will be conducting DUI checkpoints in both Newport Beach and Costa Mesa on Friday night.

Costa Mesa officers will get first crack at potentially inebriated drivers Friday, when they conduct their checkpoint at northbound Harbor Boulevard at Fair Drive from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday. Along with finding drivers under the influence, the checkpoint is meant to educate motorists on the dangers of drinking and driving or driving without a license.

A checkpoint in Costa Mesa on Friday yielded three DUI arrests, officials said.

Newport Beach police will conduct their checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday. Their checkpoint will be on northbound Dover Drive at 16th Street. Officers chose the area because of its location to bars and restaurants.
