WHITTIER — Corona del Mar High senior Mitch Sands came up big in the 13th inning to lead the Sea Kings to a 5-2 victory over host California in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs Friday.

Sands had an RBI double and scored a run in the top of the 13th, when the Sea Kings (16-10) scored three runs with two outs. He also snagged a would-be double in left field and threw home to catcher Beau Attyah, who tagged out the runner for the final out in the bottom of the 13th, when the Condors (15-12) had two runners on.

“How we got the win was great,” CdM Coach John Emme said. “People got their money’s worth, that’s for sure. I thought we were going to be there all night.”
