SANTA BARBARA — Top-ranked UC Irvine put together a 10-run inning in the fourth in the Big West Conference game Friday.

The 10 runs were the most the Anteaters (41-12, 21-1 in conference) have scored in an inning this season.

Jeff Cusick led the team with three RBIs, batting two for four with a run scored. Casey Stevenson and Ronnie Shaeffer added two RBIs and two hits apiece, while Ryan Fisher, DJ Crumlich, Ben Orloff and Eric Deragisch all drove in a run.

The Gauchos took the early lead, plating a run on Brian Gump’s RBI single in the third and then extended the margin to 3-1 lead in the fourth as Matt Valaika tagged starter Daniel Bibona for a two-run home run.

Stevenson’s third home run of the season would tie the game for UCI in the top of the fourth at 1-1 and the Anteaters then took control of the game in the fifth, bringing 14 batters to the plate.

Bibona picked up the win (11-1) after pitching 5 1/3 innings. The southpaw yielded a season-high six runs on eight hits and struck out nine while walking four in the effort.

Ford fell to 4-5 after giving up 10 runs in 4 2/3 innings and striking out six. The Gauchos were led by Valaika and Bryce Tefelski, who combined for four RBIs.

The series today continues at 1 p.m.

NCAA Championships

OWINGS MILLS — UC Irvine finished 22nd at the Caves Valley Golf Club Friday.

The Anteaters’ last round was their best, shooting a 301 and finishing with a 72-hole total of 1,249 (320-316-312-301).

Arizona State won the 24-team tournament with a score of 1,182 (302-298-291-291), eight shots ahead of second place UCLA. Purdue’s Maria Hernandez was the individual champion with a one-over-par 289 (74-72-72-71).

Senior Jane Chin ended her UCI career in 16th place, the highest finish for an Anteater player at the NCAA Championships. She carded a one-over 73 on the final round and ended with a total of 298 (75-75-75-73) over four days.

Junior Patty Chawalitmetha was tied for 70th with a score of 311 (78-80-76-77), while freshman Lalita Patipaksiri was tied for 107th with a 320 (80-82-80-78). Freshman Joy Trotter improved 11 shots from her third round with a 74 Friday and ended the tournament with a score of 325 (87-79-85-74). Sophomore Hillary Packard recorded a 327 (87-82-81-77) and was tied for 115th.

Chin an All-American

OWINGS MILLS — UC Irvine senior Jane Chin was named Duramed National Golf Coaches Assn. first-team All-American at the annual awards banquet.

Chin becomes the second Anteater to gain NGCA All-American honors and the first to earn first-team distinction. She joins Walailak Satarak who was named honorable mention in 2002.

Chin was also awarded NGCA All-West Region distinction.
