PASADENA — Senior Chris Griffin went two for two with a double and a walk Tuesday, but for the second straight year the Lightning lost in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs.

Griffin batted .833 with three doubles and three runs batted in the playoffs for Sage (16-5), which finished with the program’s best winning percentage (.800) in school history.

Junior Alex Jimenez pitched six innings and struck out eight. Jimenez finishes the year 10-2. Michael Yorita went two for three with an RBI.

NEWPORT BEACH — The No. 4-seeded Lightning almost upset defending champion Cerritos before losing on games in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club Tuesday.

Sage Hill (16-8), which had lost to Cerritos, 15-3, earlier this season, fell short of handing the Dons (26-0) their first loss of the season.

“I know several papers and coaches did not give us much of a chance,” said Longoria, who guided the boys to their first semifinal appearance in the program’s history. “But we came to win, not just to play. I think we earned some respect from a very good team.”
